Autism Help for Parents-What does support look like for parents of children with Autism?
As we mentioned in last weeks blog, its crucial that you are taking care of yourself so that you are better equipped to handle the challenges of parenting. But what are some other things that you can look into to support you as a parent?
Support Groups on Facebook:
There are a lot of support groups on Facebook that are a great place to start if you are looking for other parents you can relate to. These groups offer a great opportunity to connect with other parents who can relate to your experience and provide valuable insights. By reaching out to others who have children with autism, you may find that you feel less isolated and gain valuable tools and resources to help you navigate your journey.
Instagram:
Instagram can be useful in connecting you with all types of people. If your child is coming into teenhood, we suggest looking out for instagram accounts made by autistic people who use their accounts to express some of the challenges that they face. This may help you to have an insight into what your autistic young person may need from you. Even if they don’t want anything in particular, it may be helpful to know where they’re at.
Councillor/Therapist:
Alternatively, you can seek professional help from a therapist who can guide you on how to manage stress and anxiety related to parenting. Professional help can provide insight into the underlying issues and help you develop strategies to cope with them. They can also provide you with a safe space to talk about your difficulties and feelings.
Respite Care:
Arranging for respite care could be the step you need to truly give yourself a break. Family members, friends, or specialised caregivers can provide temporary relief, allowing you to recharge. Respite care can help to prevent burnout and reduce stress. It can also provide an opportunity to focus on your own health and wellbeing.
Taking breaks:
Taking breaks from your daily routine and engaging in activities you enjoy such as reading, exercising, or spending time with friends can also benefit your mental and emotional well-being. Taking breaks can also provide an opportunity to reset and refocus your energy. It can help to reduce stress levels and increase your productivity. Additionally, it can help you to stay motivated to reach your own goals.
